LAUSD board sets priorities in face of $1.6 billion drop in budget
The Los Angeles Unified School District‘s Board of Education has approved priorities and guard rails for its upcoming budget, including $1.6 billion in planned budget reductions in fiscal years 2027 and 2028.
The board on Tuesday approved a resolution authored by Board Member Kelly Gonez, which laid out three guard rails for implementing budget cuts:
— Center students’ need and minimize the impact of any reductions on students
— Prioritize equity, in particular protecting high-needs schools as defined by the Student Equity Needs Index and the Black Student Achievement Plan
— Recognize the value of all employees and the critical work they do to support students, families and schools
The resolution further committed the board to public conversations about pending budget reductions in the coming months and to gathering feedback from students, families, and school staff through town hall meetings throughout the district and multilingual surveys.
“Los Angeles Unified remains steadfast in maintaining critical investments that reflect the needs of our students,” Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said. “Let it be clear: Any budget adjustments will be guided by equity and a commitment to supporting our schools. This board’s dedication to ensuring equity will continue to guide our choices.”
The board also unanimously passed a resolution that “reaffirms all LAUSD schools as sanctuary spaces, condemns the federal militarization of immigrant communities, and demands full legal protections for all students, families, and community members — regardless of immigration status.”
Another resolution that passed unanimously is meant to strength the Community Schools Initiative. The district’s nationally recognized CSI model, which centers on whole-child, whole-community support, addresses academic performance, social-emotional development, and community engagement — particularly in schools serving historically underserved populations.
“This resolution affirms that Community Schools are here to stay and marks the next phase of deepening meaningful teaching, learning, and assessment,” resolution co-author and Board Member Karla Griego said. “With early data showing real impact for students, families and educators, we are committed to building the infrastructure needed to sustain and grow this work.”
